MOVIE REVIEW: Till (Oct. 2022)
This has got to be one of the most believable, honest, emotionally stirring display of tragedy I have seen on screen. This movie broke my heart many times over.
I felt the anger, grief, tension, brutality, sobriety, regrets, strength, love and every deep emotion this movie set itself to make us feel.
‘Till’ is a biographical movie based on the true story of Mamie Till Bradley, a mother who pursued justice after her 14-year-old son was murdered in 1955.
It’s a thought provoking, tragic story that takes us back to an ugly time of racial discrimination in America.
The movie is brilliantly crude and powerful in its depiction of events. With an effective score, awesome cinematography and well packaged production design, we are easily transported to this dark period where a mother has to summon her inner strength to overcome fear, hate and weak judicial system to fight for justice.
Danielle Deadwyler who played “Cuffee” in ‘The Harder they Fall’ was brilliant in this film. A truly emotional and convincing outing from her.
Whoopi Goldberg co-produced and also starred while our very own Chinonye Chukwu co-wrote and directed the film. I must admit she did an excellent job here as both screenwriter and director.
Till is remarkable in replaying the emotions of a dark era and also shows a mother’s deep love for her son. Great work of history here and a profound filmmaking attempt. One of my top movies of the year no doubt.
